They participate in ACADEMIES since it’s begining. And the work presented this year was Lisa Spengler and Moa Hallgreen’s graduation project, a collection of furniture and textile objects made from clothes and other textiles collected in Berlin’s streets. The project focus was in the handmade aspect of the employed textile techniques. It was beautiful! A complex and mature project, which seemed “complete”.
The Weissensee School promotes interdisciplinary works in all of the departments. The Textile Design and Surface Department is focused in surface design research, and in the membrane system that “becomes incredibly complex, due to the comtemporary technology and the social-cultural context.”
The course has the proposition to promote an approach to design that combines professional pragmatism with critical thinking, transdisciplinary interchanges and aesthetic autonomy.
Moa told that the school is sufficiently open-minded to accept bold and innovative work propositions, and to guide their students cleverly, giving them directions without, however, interfering in the processes – which might be quite individual.
It is important to say that their work – and many others, I suppose – is halfway between art and design. If there is no creative freedom, when working close to art, the technique fades.
I ask them how much does their country link the textile/ fashion creation with local identity, and Moa answers that this work, named LUM, reflects about Berlin’s identity:
a city where furniture and other quality pieces and materials might be found in the streets.
The textile material was treated with usual techniques, exept the scale has been altered, giving rise to large pieces, supported by wood and metal, also from the streets.

Eles participam do Academies desde o princípio. E o trabalho apresentado era a tese de graduação de Lisa Spengler e Moa Hallgreen, uma coleção de móveis e objetos têxteis, realizados com roupas e têxteis coletados nas ruas de Berlin. O foco do projeto estava colocado no aspecto artesanal das técnicas têxteis empregadas. Era lindo! Um projeto complexo e maduro, que tinha uma  aparência de “completo”.
A escola Weissensee promove trabalhos interdisciplinares entre todos os departamentos. O departamento de Design Têxtil e Superfície esta focado na pesquisa de design de superfícies e no sistema de membranas que “com a tecnologia contemporânea e contexto sócio cultural se torna incrivelmente complexo”. O curso se propõe a promover uma abordagem de design que combina pragmatismo profissional com pensamento crítico, trocas transdisciplinares e autonomia estética.
Moa contou que a escola é suficientemente aberta para aceitar propostas de trabalho atrevidas e inovadoras e para orientar seus alunos com inteligência, direcionando sem, no entanto, interferir nos processos que podem ser bastante individuais. Importante dizer do trabalho delas, e muitos outros, imagino, que situam-se a meio caminho entre arte e design. Sem liberdade criativa, nas aproximações coma a arte, a técnica se esvai.
Quando pergunto sobre o quanto o país vincula a criação em têxtil/moda com identidade local, Moa responde que este trabalho mesmo, chamado LUM, reflete sobre a identidade da cidade de Berlin. Uma cidade onde móveis e outras peças e materiais de qualidade podem ser encontrados nas ruas. Os materiais têxteis foram trabalhados em técnicas convencionais, mas com escalas alteradas fazendo surgir peças de grande formato que usavam como suporte madeira e metais também das ruas.
